Christian Purslow: 'Steven Gerrard could put Rangers back on map'

Steven Gerrard could put Rangers "back on the map" if they appoint the former Liverpool captain as their new manager, according to former Reds MD Christian Purslow.

Former Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow has claimed that Steven Gerrard could put Rangers "back on the map".

Gerrard has confirmed that he has held "positive" talks with the Ibrox club's hierarchy regarding replacing Graeme Murty, who was dismissed from his role on Tuesday.

Purslow insists that he can see the merits of Rangers looking to appoint Gerrard, despite his lack of managerial experience, and believes that his reputation could help restore the Glasgow club to its former glory.

"Ten years ago Rangers were in a major European final and the trials and tribulations of that club since then are well documented," Purslow told Sky Sports News.

"Frankly, disappearing from the top table of European football where this once great club proudly sat, to associate with a person of the reputation of Steven Gerrard puts them back on the map.

"Even if they don't succeed in confirming the appointment, I may say. And on another tough season and another terrible Old Firm result let's just hope that wasn't part of the calculation, even being linked with Steven.

"It doesn't look that way because he himself has confirmed that those discussions are ongoing so this looks like it might be a real story."

Rangers last won the Scottish Premiership title in 2011.
