Brendan Rodgers: 'Liverpool could yet finish in top four'

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that his side still have a chance of finishing in the top four of the Premier League.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has called on his side to push for a top-four finish in the Premier League following their 2-0 defeat of Newcastle United on Monday.

Goals by Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen helped the Reds see off the 10-man Magpies at Anfield and cut the gap between themselves and fourth-placed Manchester City to four points.

Rodgers told Sky Sports News: "I thought we showed attacking intent in the game, won the ball back quickly and controlled the game until the last five six minutes in the first half, when we started to give the ball away too cheaply.

"I think we were fortunate not to give away a penalty, but thankfully it didn't go against us. Joe Allen is very much an unsung player for us. He does a lot of the dirty work for us, pressing the ball excellently and great in possession.

"Manchester City have maybe opened up the door a wee bit and if we keep winning our games we will see what will happen but I am sure that there will be plenty of twists and turns to come still."

Liverpool's next Premier League fixture is on April 25, away at West Bromwich Albion.
