Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that the FA commission are right to suggest creating a new division for Premier League 'B teams'.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has given his backing to the FA commission's controversial proposal of introducing a new division for Premier League 'B teams'.

The Football Association chairman Greg Dyke revealed on Thursday that the division would be placed below League Two and would be subject to promotion and relegation.

The commission's report, which also suggests banning non-EU players from joining clubs outside of the Premier League, has been met with widespread debate.

"It is something I have thought for years should happen," Rodgers told talkSPORT. "I am a big advocate of it.

"We have to find a way to give them the opportunities because as much as we have done with the fixture scheduling of Under-21s, it doesn't bring the competitive nature that is required for you as a manager to assess a young player.

"People will talk about the tradition of the game here in this country but one of the things that's most constant is change and you have to look at ways in which you can be better and give young players a chance. I think the B league, however it is formed, is something that is very important to give young players that competitive football."

The report has also proposed to reduce the number of non-homegrown players in Premier League squads from 17 to 12 over five years.
