Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey asks Brendan Rodgers for playing time in the Under-21 side if he is not part of his first-team plans at this stage of the season.

Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has insisted that he is happy to get more playing time in the reserves if his first-team opportunities continue to be limited.

Shelvey has played just four times for the Reds in 2013 and recently turned out for the Under-21 side against Manchester United and Southampton.

The youngster is adamant that he must play every week at this stage of his career to maintain progression.

He told the club's official website: "I just want to keep playing games because there's nothing worse than training all week and not playing at the weekend. It's a case of getting myself some games and keeping myself ticking over.

"I was told I was playing against United for the U-21s. I thought it was because they were against a bigger team and they're doing so well, I might help the team get a win.

"After that, I said to [Liverpool manager] Brendan Rodgers, 'If there are any other games that fit in with the schedule, can I play in them?' Liverpool fans should be excited for the players that they've got coming through, and hopefully they can progress and get themselves games in the first team."

Reds starlet Suso also turned out for the Under-21s but they were still beaten 1-0 by United in the development match this week.

Shelvey has scored five times in 29 Liverpool appearances so far this season.
