Raheem Sterling rejects suggestions that he faked illness in order to get out of Liverpool training and instigate his move to Manchester City.

Raheem Sterling has rubbished suggestions that he feigned illness to miss training at Liverpool in order to instigate his transfer to Manchester City.

The England international missed two days of training in the week leading up to his £49m switch to the Etihad Stadium.

There were rumours that Sterling's illness was not genuine, but the 20-year-old has opted to put the record straight.

While speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Sterling said: "Everyone thought I threw a sicknote in. I was in training on the Tuesday. In the changing room my stomach started hurting. I still went out and trained though.

"That day I went home, and I told the doc I was ill. My stomach was rumbling and I had diarrhoea. The doctor just said to me you can't be around the other players. For the next 48 hours, I stayed at home.

"That's what the club doctor told me to do. That's exactly what happened. Everyone tries to make it seem bad but you've just got to take it on the chin."

Sterling recently admitted that he was "disappointed" in the manner of his departure from Liverpool.
