Virgil van Dijk has acknowledged that Liverpool put themselves "in a bad position" as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Manchester United on Saturday.

The Red Devils quickly found themselves in the lead at Old Trafford, with Marcus Rashford scoring twice inside the first 24 minutes of the match.

Liverpool dominated in the second half and were rewarded when Eric Bailly turned the ball into his own net, but could not find an equaliser come the final whistle.

"We put ourselves in not a good position," Van Dijk told BBC Sport. "I should have done better for the second one. I didn't expect it. It was a deflection as well, so a bit unlucky as well.

"They gave us time, sat back - even at home - and hope for the best on the counter and that is what they did especially in the second half but we had already put ourselves in a bad position. We need to analyse what we did in the first half."

Liverpool remain third in the Premier League table but are now five points adrift of second-placed United.
