Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has claimed that his side are improving by the week and will be serious contenders for the Premier League title this season.

The Reds make the short trip across Stanley Park to face rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby this evening, aiming to close the gap on leaders Chelsea to six points.

Wijnaldum believes that last season's shock success for Leicester City proves that anything can happen, insisting that he and his teammates are continuing to grow in confidence and are not giving up hope of lifting the trophy for the first time.

"I have faith and confidence we can win the Premier League," he told Sky Sports News. "The season is long so we can improve a lot and we must do everything. We must believe in it and then it is possible.

"Leicester won it last season so I think that was an eye-opener for a lot of teams in the Premier League. Since the beginning of the season we have been trying to play our own game, with counter-pressing, high pressing, and we are trying to play good football when we have the ball.

"From the beginning until now, it is only getting better. It's not always the result we want - we have played a few draws and defeats, not against big opponents - but that is how it is in the Premier League. Anyone can beat anyone."

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 14 league games - a 4-3 defeat to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium earlier this month.
