The 29-year-old has missed Liverpool's last three games against Newcastle United and Southampton in the league as well as the FA Cup victory over Aston Villa.
However, the return of Matip has provided a boost for Jurgen Klopp's side, who have been hampered by defensive injuries all season, as they look to stop United going six points clear at the top of the table on Sunday.
If Matip is fit to play against United then he will likely line up alongside Fabinho at centre-back, although Klopp may still opt to start with Rhys Williams, Nat Phillips or Jordan Henderson in that position.
Liverpool, who are without a win in their last three league games, would move level on points with United if they were to pick up three points this weekend. body check tags ::
