Liverpool have recorded a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, but Jurgen Klopp's side miss out on the Premier League title after Manchester City's win at Brighton & Hove Albion.

A double from Sadio Mane was enough to take Liverpool to 97 points, and an early goal for Brighton at the Amex Stadium had initially lifted expectations on Merseyside.

However, City fought back to register a comfortable 4-1 triumph over the Seagulls, a result which sees Pep Guardiola's men retain their top-flight crown by one point.

Liverpool quickly set about trying to find an early goal to ease the tension inside the stadium, and Divock Origi forced Rui Patricio into a save after holding off the attention of former Liverpool man Conor Coady.

Wolves were struggling to put anything together in an attacking sense, and it came as little surprise when Liverpool went in front as Mane fired home from six yards out after meeting a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Andrew Robertson also went close, with Patricio making a smart save to his left to deny the full-back, but there was an eruption of noise from the crowd as news filtered through about Brighton's opening goal against Man City.

There was a lull in proceedings as everyone took stock of what was happening at the Amex Stadium, and it allowed Wolves to finally make an impact going forward.

Jonny got down the left before seeing his low pass helped on to Matt Doherty on the edge of the area, and the Irishman saw his first-time strike from 20 yards hit the top of Alisson's crossbar.

Liverpool set about trying to net a second goal soon after the restart, but Klopp's side lacked the intensity which they displayed in their triumph over Barcelona on Tuesday night.

Wolves were arguably the better team as the game progressed past the hour mark, although Origi wasted a glorious chance to double his side's advantage by firing over the crossbar from by the penalty spot.

City effectively made sure of the title with two more goals against Brighton, and it led to a relatively flat final quarter as Liverpool's fans were left to contemplate 29 years without a top-flight crown.

Wolves continued to push for an equaliser which they perhaps deserved based on their second-half play, but Diogo Jota could only fire straight at Alisson after latching on to a long pass from Doherty.

However, Liverpool doubled their advantage with nine minutes remaining. Alexander-Arnold's cross from a deep position found Mane, who sent a header into the far corner of the net from 10 yards out.

The Senegalese was marginally offside when making his run, but the goal mattered little with City holding a commanding lead against Brighton on the south coast.

Virgil van Dijk hit the crossbar with a header as Liverpool ended their domestic campaign on the front foot, but attention will now turn to their preparation for the Champions League final with Tottenham Hotspur in just under three weeks' time.
