Jurgen Klopp: 'Liverpool will not spend big on new players'

Jurgen Klopp says that he does not have to spend big money to improve Liverpool further, but instead keep his current group together for a number of years.

Jurgen Klopp has said that keeping hold of Liverpool's current group of players is more important than adding to his squad in the summer transfer window.

The Reds spent big last year in making Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker the record signings in their position, as well as bringing in Naby Keita, Fabinho and cut-price attacker Xherdan Shaqiri.

Liverpool's heavy investment has paid off as they are second in the Premier League, a point off leaders Manchester City, and into the last eight of the Champions League.

Klopp insists that he is therefore happy with his squad and is not looking to bring in any big-money signings ahead of next season.

"I don't think this is a team at the moment where we have to spend the big money or whatever," The Mirror quotes him as saying. "The best way to do it is bring together a group of players, try to develop them altogether and then stay together for a while.

"And that was maybe the main problem of Liverpool for the last decade. When they had a good team after a season they went all over the world. That will not happen this year for sure."

Liverpool had been tipped to make an offer for Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez, while Steven Bergwijn has also been linked with a move to Anfield.
