Liverpool have reportedly tabled a €55m (£47.3m) bid for Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

The Reds were strongly linked with a move for the France international last summer following his continued progress at Monaco, but they were priced out of a deal.

As a result, Real Madrid swooped in to secure Tchouameni's signature on a six-year deal for €80m (£68.8m), but the 23-year-old received mixed reviews in his debut season.

Tchouameni was a regular fixture under Carlo Ancelotti with 50 appearances in all tournaments - setting up four goals - but he often came under fire for his performances.

Furthermore, Tchouameni did not start a single Champions League knockout game for Los Blancos last season, having often been overshadowed by compatriot Eduardo Camavinga.

The signing of Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund has also raised questions over the future of Tchouameni, while Toni Kroos has also extended his stay for another year, and Luka Modric could soon follow suit.

According to El Nacional, Liverpool are attempting to capitalise on the uncertainty and have made a €55m (£47.3m) offer for Tchouameni as Jurgen Klopp's midfield refresh gathers pace.

However, the Reds' offer is expected to be rejected by Real Madrid, although president Florentino Perez would not be against offloading Tchouameni for the right price.

Perez would supposedly be looking to recoup the full €80m (£68.8m) that they paid for Tchouameni last year, although Ancelotti is not thought to be keen on losing the midfielder this summer.

Despite playing a bit-part role in Europe, Tchouameni featured from the first whistle 24 times in La Liga last season, while he also started Real's 2-1 Copa del Rey final win over Osasuna and both of their Club World Cup games.

Liverpool are known to be targeting multiple midfield reinforcements this summer, having waved goodbye to all of Naby Keita, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Leighton Clarkson and Juventus loanee Arthur.

The Merseyside giants were considered Real's closest rivals for the signature of Bellingham, but with Borussia Dortmund's asking price proving too steep, they moved on to cheaper targets.

Alexis Mac Allister has already joined Klopp's side in a £35m move from Brighton & Hove Albion, becoming Liverpool's first signing of the window and inheriting the number 10 jersey.

Liverpool are also believed to be interested in Nice starlet Khephren Thuram, who has been urged to move to Anfield by Reds defender and compatriot Ibrahima Konate.

Thuram is said to have agreed personal terms with the Reds, but Nice are yet to receive a formal bid for the 22-year-old.
