Liverpool have reportedly identified the Feyenoord duo of Mats Wieffer and Lutsharel Geertruida as potential signings in the upcoming transfer window.
The Reds are set to bid farewell to Jurgen Klopp at the end of the current campaign, with Arne Slot being widely reported to succeed the German as the next manager at Anfield.
During Klopp's tenure in Merseyside, Liverpool secured six major trophies, including winning their first domestic title in 30 years in the 2019-20 season.
Slot, on the other hand, has never coached a professional team outside the Netherlands but has won the Eredivisie and Dutch Cup with Feyenoord.
Liverpool eyeing up Feyenoord duo
According to Football Insider, Slot may not be moving to Anfield alone, though, with defensive midfielder Wieffer and defender Geertruida potentially set to join him next season.
The report adds that the Reds have been monitoring both players for some time, even predating the speculation surrounding Slot's move to the club.
Geertruida made his professional debut during the 2017-18 season and is now just four matches shy of reaching 200 appearances for the Eredivisie outfit. He has spent his entire professional career at Feyenoord up to this point.
Primarily recognised as a right back, one of Geertruida's notable attributes is his versatility. Standing at 6'1", he is equally adept at performing in various positions, including centre-half, left-back, or even in the holding midfield role.
The rumours linking Geertruida to the Reds initially surfaced last month when he was seen attending Liverpool's 2-2 draw against West Ham United at the London Stadium.
Geertruida to replace Matip in the Reds' defence?
The 23-year-old's current contract runs until the summer of 2025, meaning that the upcoming transfer window could be Feyenoord's last opportunity to cash in on the player, who they value in the region of £25m.
Geertruida's potential addition would bolster Liverpool's defensive options, especially with Joel Matip set to depart as a free agent this summer.
Wieffer, meanwhile, has amassed 42 appearances across all competitions this season, showcasing his versatility by featuring in both defensive and central midfield roles.
He has nine international caps under his belt and is expected to be a part of the Netherlands squad that will head to Germany for Euro 2024 later this year.
The 24-year-old arrived at Feyenoord from Excelsior in 2022 for just £500,000 and is now believed to be worth around £23m - his current deal with the Eredivisie giants runs until 2027.
Wieffer was linked with a potential move to RB Leipzig last summer and is also understood to be on the radar of Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur.
Despite the speculation, neither player's signings are assured, as Slot will first need to get the go-ahead from Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes during the offseason. body check tags ::
