Tony Mowbray has admitted that he would like to sign Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey on a loan basis.
However, the Middlesbrough boss believes that he faces competition from a number of Championship clubs for the 20-year-old's services.
"I think there is a possibility of something happening on that, but I'm very wary of going on record about another club's footballer because Kenny Dalglish is keeping his squad intact and protecting his football club," said Mowbray.
"If that changes then there might be a situation where Shelvey will have choices. From what I'm hearing he's got lots of choices in the Championship.
"So let's wait and see. I think if that young boy goes on loan somewhere and if it's Middlesbrough, if he gets that opportunity, then we would welcome a boy with his talent. If he goes somewhere else then we would wish him well."
Shelvey has already had a loan spell at Blackpool this season.
