Newcastle United are reportedly preparing to join the race to sign Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram.
Since ending a two-decade wait to return to the Champions League, the Magpies have been heavily linked with a wide array of players.
Most recently, it has been claimed that Eddie Howe is giving consideration to signing the likes of Marc Cucurella and Nicolo Barella of Chelsea and Inter Milan respectively.
In the case of the latter, he is seemingly regarded as an option that would represent a statement of intent, yet one which currently remains unlikely.
Inter allegedly have little intention of parting ways with one of their key men, while the Italy international is said to be against a switch to St James' Park.
Regardless of Barella's stance, though, Howe will feel the need to identify alternatives, aware that Newcastle are in competition with teams both in the Premier League and abroad.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle have reportedly included Thuram on their list of options to strengthen in the middle of the park.
The 22-year-old has just enjoyed an impressive campaign in Ligue 1, chipping in with two goals and four assists from 30 starts and five substitute outings.
However, with Nice not qualifying for Europe next season, they are in a position where they may have to consider realistic offers for their most prized asset.
A previous report has already indicated that Liverpool are interested in signing Thuram, adding to the acquisition of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Thuram, who recently made his international debut for France, is said to be valued in the region of £35m, a fee deemed acceptable by Newcastle and Liverpool.
With the player having just two years left on his contract, a scenario may occur where Nice have to be open-minded to varying payment structures, aware that they are not in a position to agree a renewal with Thuram.
The progression of any transfer may be delayed due to Thuram being selected in France's Under-21 squad for the upcoming European Championship.
Although Manchester City have been linked with Thuram in the past, the Premier League champions appear to have moved onto other targets. body check tags ::
