Newcastle United are reportedly expected to renew their interest in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez in January after missing out on signing Marc Guehi during the summer transfer window.

Guehi was frequently mentioned as a potential departure from Crystal Palace this summer, but a move for the England centre-back never materialised.

The Magpies made four official offers for the defender, but the Eagles were firm on their asking price and rejected each bid, ultimately leading Newcastle to abandon their pursuit.

However, Eddie Howe's side are believed to still be in the market for defensive reinforcements, and while they may return for Guehi in January, it seems they are also considering an improved bid for the Palace man's England teammate.

Newcastle to return for Gomez signature in 2025

According to Football Insider, Newcastle are expected to open discussions with Liverpool about a potential deal for Gomez, who has fallen in the pecking order under new Reds' boss Arne Slot.

The 27-year-old is widely considered the fourth-choice centre-back at Anfield behind Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah.

The report adds that the Magpies were in talks with Liverpool over a player-plus-cash swap deal involving Anthony Gordon during the summer, but the discussions did not lead to any concrete action.

It is understood that Gomez is expected to make a decision about his long-term future ahead of the January window and Newcastle are lining up an improved offer to bring the England international to St James' Park.

However, the Reds are believed to be reluctant to let the defender depart unless they can secure a suitable replacement first, which could complicate any potential transfers for him.

Alexander-Arnold to follow Gomez away from Anfield in January?

Gomez is not the only Liverpool player whose future at the club is being questioned, as Trent Alexander-Arnold is another who has been linked with a move away from Anfield.

The 25-year-old has become one of Liverpool's key players since emerging from the academy and has established himself as one of the best right-back in world football.

However, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, there are growing concerns among Reds' fans that their homegrown talent could leave as a free agent in just a few months.

TEAMtalk recently revealed that Real Madrid are in "constant contact" regarding a potential free transfer for the Liverpool defender, who will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement to move to the Bernabeu in January.

Caught Offside, meanwhile, report that Slot's side are preparing to approach Bayer Leverkusen over a deal for Jeremie Frimpong if Los Blancos succeed in their quest to land Alexander-Arnold. body check tags ::
