Liverpool 'willing' to reopen pursuit of Euro 2024 winner despite summer rejection

Liverpool are reportedly willing to reopen their pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who rejected the advances of the Reds during the summer window.

Liverpool are reportedly prepared to make another move for Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi in January.

The Euro 2024 winner was the Reds' top transfer target during the summer window, with Arne Slot highlighting the 25-year-old as a world-class midfielder.

Zubimendi helped Spain to European Championship glory, playing 45 minutes of the final against England after Rodri suffered an injury in the first half.

It was widely reported that Liverpool had agreed to pay the £50.1m exit clause in Zubmendi's contract, although there was an unexpected obstacle in the player's move to Anfield.

Zubimendi decided to remain at his boyhood club, with Real Sociedad set to fight for La Liga and Europa League glory this season.

Liverpool still interested in Zubimendi?

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are still keen on securing the services of Real Sociedad's Zubimendi in the near future.

The report claims that the Reds are willing to return to the hunt for the 25-year-old during the upcoming January transfer window, despite the midfielder rejecting the Anfield club in the summer.

After missing out on Zubimendi, Liverpool did not seek to recruit an alternative, highlighting how they are only interested in players who can genuinely improve a talent-laden squad.

The Spaniard fits that billing according to head coach Slot, who recently stated that his side have "moved on" following the disappointment of failing to bring the Real Sociedad man to Merseyside.

That being said, it is believed that Liverpool are still targeting a move for Zubimendi in the New Year as they look to boost their chances of challenging the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal for the Premier League title.

Zubimendi regrets and midfield solutions

During the early stages of the 2024-25 campaign, there have been numerous reports from Spain claiming that Zubimendi already regrets his decision to snub Liverpool in the summer.

Real Sociedad have endured a tricky start to the La Liga season, with the collection of five points from their opening seven matches leaving them in 16th place.

Elsewhere in Europe, Liverpool have performed well at the beginning of the term despite missing out on their primary target during the summer window.

Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister are thriving as the deep-lying pairing in Slot's midfield so far, with Dominik Szoboszlai operating further forward. body check tags ::
