Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Raheem Sterling has been offered an "incredible" new contract by Liverpool and warned his representatives that the club will not be held to ransom as they try to come to an agreement over the England international's future.
Sterling's current deal still has over two years to run, but Liverpool are keen to tie the 20-year-old to a fresh long-term contract following his progress for both club and country this season.
The offer presented by Liverpool is said to have been available to Sterling for over a month.
"The club has offered an incredible deal for a young player and I have spoken to Raheem a number of times and he is very happy here and I think you see that in his game," PA quotes Rodgers as saying.
"The player is very happy and wants to continue working the way he has been.
"He has made some great strides in these last couple of years and has now got reward for that and hopefully his representatives can find agreement with the club."
Sterling has scored nine goals in all competitions this season, which is one shy of his total from 2013-14.
