Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has admitted that no progress has been made in talks over a new contract.

Van Dijk has established himself as a pillar of the Liverpool squad since arriving in a £75m move from Southampton in the summer of 2018.

The Dutchman has made 270 competitive appearances for the Reds, helping the club win the Premier League, Champions League FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and two EFL Cups.

Despite being an integral part of the Liverpool squad, there is uncertainty surrounding Van Dijk's long-term future with the Merseyside club.

The Netherlands international is one of three key players who has entered the final year of their Liverpool contracts, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

Van Dijk provides update on contract situation

As it stands, Liverpool are at risk of losing the defender on a free transfer next summer if they are unable to successfully negotiate a new contract.

Van Dijk has previously stated that he is happy at the club, but has now revealed that there has been no progress in contract negotiations.

When asked about contract talks following Sunday's friendly against Sevilla, Van Dijk told reporters: "There are no changes at the moment."

After recently returning from his summer break, Van Dijk gained valuable playing time against Sevilla, playing 74 minutes in his one and only pre-season outing.

Arne Slot's produced a dominant display to record a 4-1 victory over their Spanish opponents following a Luis Diaz brace and goals from Diogo Jota and Trey Nyoni.

Van Dijk comments on Liverpool's quiet summer

Later on Sunday, the Reds played out a goalless draw with Las Palmas in a behind-closed-doors friendly, ensuring that they finished pre-season with five wins and one draw.

While their squad already appears to be in strong shape, Liverpool's lack of transfer activity has raised some eyebrows.

Liverpool are the only Premier League club yet to make a signing, and Van Dijk has admitted that the club should make some additions to add further strength in depth to the squad.

Van Dijk said: "Obviously I think we should make some signings based on how long the season will go, but I think they are working behind the scenes."

"I am fully convinced and trust the club that they will do the right thing for us and get the best possible squad in order to compete in every competition that we are in.

"That is the main thing I am focusing on, having the trust and we will see what happens. I think they are working very hard behind the scenes, we will see how that pans out."

Having completed pre-season, Liverpool will now turn their focus to Saturday's Premier League opener against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
