Pep Guardiola: 'I need trophies to save Manchester City job'

Pep Guardiola suggests that he will be sacked as Manchester City manager if he fails to win silverware, having endured a trophyless campaign in 2016-17.

Pep Guardiola has admitted that his Manchester City tenure will ultimately be judged on how many trophies he wins during his time at the club.

The Catalan coach endured his first trophyless campaign in senior management during his maiden term at the Etihad Stadium last time out.

Much like in 2016-17, the Citizens have started the current season on fire by winning eight and drawing one of their first nine fixtures in all competitions.

However, Guardiola concedes that he must get off the mark with his first piece of silverware in English football if he is to keep his job at City.

"I cannot deny it is to win titles. Everybody expects that," he told BBC Sport. "We are going to be judged on how many titles we win. [Without that], we will be a failure. We know that.

"I do not know what is going to happen in the future. I am so happy to be here. But it will depend on the success we have. At big clubs like Manchester City, if you do not win you cannot stay."

City currently lead the way in the Premier League table by virtue of a superior goal difference over neighbours Manchester United.
