Bayern Munich reportedly have no plans to trigger the option to buy clause in Joao Cancelo's loan deal from Manchester City.

The 28-year-old made a surprise switch to the Allianz Arena from the Premier League champions in January after falling out of favour under Pep Guardiola.

It was alleged that a bust-up between player and manager sparked Cancelo's sudden exit, although the Portugal international has since denied that such a fracas occurred.

As things stand, Cancelo will return to the Etihad for the 2023-24 season, and he remains contracted to Man City for another four years.

However, Bayern possess the option to make his stay in Bavaria permanent, but according to Fabrizio Romano, the German champions will not trigger that €70m (£61.5m) clause.

Man City could still be open to letting Cancelo depart permanently, but Bayern would have to directly negotiate his exit with the Premier League champions instead.

Newly-appointed boss Thomas Tuchel will reportedly discuss Cancelo's future with the Bayern board within the next few weeks, after the defender was named on the bench for the German's first game in charge - a 4-2 thumping of Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker.

Bayern director Hasan Salihamidzic previously hinted that a £61.5m fee would prove too steep for his side to afford, telling Bild in February: "After the transfer was done, we actually thought again about how long we've been dealing with Joao. We came up with more than four years. Either our position was filled or we didn't have the money for it.

"We're playing with open cards. This sum is difficult for us to imagine in the next few years. If all sides really want a common solution, you can manage that in the end. He knows that he has been one of our dream players for years."

Cancelo has scored one goal and set up four more in his first 10 appearances for Bayern across all tournaments, but he failed to nail down a regular starting spot during his short time under Julian Nagelsmann's wing.

The ex-Juventus man was only brought on for the final 11 minutes of Der Klassiker on Saturday, replacing Alphonso Davies as Benjamin Pavard completed the full 90 at right-back.

Cancelo confirmed at the end of February that he wanted to win another trophy with Man City, offering hope of a return to the Etihad at the end of the season, telling O Jogo: "Will I still celebrate an English title with City? I hope so. I created a second family there.

"City's group is spectacular, it's the best I've ever worked in, both as a group and personally. I created great friendships. A spectacular group.

"I would go to training with great enthusiasm. Everything in life has an end. But at the end of the season I might even return, you never know."

Cancelo has won two Premier League titles, two EFL Cups and the Community Shield during his successful stint at Man City, scoring nine goals and providing 22 assists in 154 matches. body check tags ::
