Newcastle United are reportedly toying with the idea of trying to sign Wolfsburg midfielder Felix Nmecha.

On the back of securing a return to the Champions League after two years away, Magpies fans are eagerly awaiting a number of new arrivals.

The Premier League outfit confirmed the signing of Yankuba Minteh from Odense on Monday, but the prospect will spend the next campaign on loan at Feyenoord.

Nevertheless, Eddie Howe is expected to be proactive when it comes to making senior additions with many areas of the pitch requiring extra strength in depth.

With regards to central midfield, Howe arguably requires an alternative to Bruno Guimaraes, a defensive-minded option that can share the workload with one of their star men.

However, according to The Telegraph, Newcastle may instead look to try to get a deal over the line for a more offensive player in Nmecha.

The one-cap Germany international has enjoyed a productive first two years at Wolfsburg, contributing three goals and seven assists from his 50 appearances in all competitions.

Having made the jump up to international level, Nmecha has effectively become one of Wolfsburg's key players since failing to make the grade at Manchester City.

Despite being one of City's leading youngsters over the past decade, Nmecha was restricted to just 72 minutes of senior action spread over three appearances.

His most notable outing was a second-half showing versus Birmingham City in the FA Cup in January 2021, but he has since started to fulfil his potential in the Bundesliga.

The report suggests that Newcastle have become admirers of the 22-year-old and could look to wrap up a £15m deal over the coming weeks.

Wolfsburg would have been in a strong position to retain Nmecha's services had they qualified for European competition, yet they missed out on the Europa League on the final day of the season.

Nmecha plies his trade at Wolfsburg alongside his older brother Lukas Nmecha, who has only gone on to become a success at the Volkswagen Arena having failed to become a regular feature in Pep Guardiola's squad at the Etihad Stadium. body check tags ::
