Reports that Barcelona midfielder Xavi could leave the Nou Camp for Manchester City's Major League Soccer franchise New York FC have been dismissed by representatives of the midfielder.

It had been suggested that City were keen to make the Spanish World Cup winner a marquee signing when New York begin playing in the MLS next year.

However, his representative told Goal.com: "There has never been a formal proposal from another team for Xavi.

"Who wouldn't want Xavi? It's normal for his age, for his quality.

"All of this has come about after Xavi said he didn't know if he could retire at Barcelona."

The 33-year-old veteran's contract with the Blaugrana lasts until June 2016.
