Michael Carrick expresses the significance of Manchester United overcoming Club Brugge in the Champions League qualifier between the two sides.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has admitted that the upcoming Champions League qualifying clashes against Club Brugge could define the club's season.

The Red Devils will play host to their Belgian counterparts at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening, with the return leg penned in for eight days later.

Having not played in the competition last term due to their seventh-placed finish in 2013-14, Carrick has stressed the importance that is riding on the two games with Brugge.

"It's going to be a big night on Tuesday. It'll be a big two games in fact - they could help set us up for the season," the 34-year-old told the club's official website.

"What we have to gain [from winning the tie] is very important, but you approach both matches as any other games. We want to win on Tuesday and not concede. Hopefully we can get a good start and take a lead to their place. We'll be ready."

United have lost twice in their six outings against Belgian opposition.
