Teddy Sheringham: 'Play Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane together for England'

Wayne Rooney should partner Harry Kane in England's attack during Euro 2016, according to Teddy Sheringham.

Teddy Sheringham has refuted the suggestion that Wayne Rooney should be axed from the England squad for Euro 2016.

Following the weekend's 3-2 win over Germany - a game that Rooney missed through injury - the clamour has grown for Tottenham Hotspur frontman Harry Kane to lead the attack.

On top of that, with Jamie Vardy, Danny Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge in reserve, questions have been raised regarding the need for captain Rooney.

However, ex-England international Sheringham has stressed that not only should the Manchester United striker be in Roy Hodgson's 23-man selection for the tournament, he must also partner Kane up front.

"People are being hugely disrespectful to Wayne Rooney even questioning whether he should go," he told The Mirror.

"For me it's a no-brainer that Wayne should play with Harry Kane once he's fit again after his knee injury. It fits perfectly for me. Harry is an out and out striker leading the line, running in behind and hitting the target every time.

"Wayne's perfect position has always been just off the main striker, feeding but also scoring his goals as well. I think if you have two players up there that can score goals it's invaluable."

Rooney will also be absent for tonight's friendly against the Netherlands, with one report having claimed that he will act as a pundit in the ITV studio at Wembley.
