Alisson's struggles: A look at five other goalkeepers who had a bad day

Alisson is not alone in having a challenging afternoon.

If Liverpool's Alisson can take one sliver of solace from his disastrous display against Manchester City, it's that he's far from the first goalkeeper to have had a bad day.

Here the PA news agency fumbles and miskicks its way through five more number ones who endured a night of multiple blunders.

Fabien Barthez (November 2001)

In one of the most notorious goalkeeping meltdowns of all, the Man United keeper made two spectacular late errors to hand Arsenal the points at Highbury, first scuffing an attempted clearance straight at Thierry Henry who duly slotted home, then five minutes later beating the striker to a through-ball only to let control slip and allow Henry to place the ball into an empty net.

Paul Rachubka (November 2011)

Rachubka's performance for Leeds against Blackpool was so dismal he was replaced with youth team keeper Alex Cairns at half-time. First Rachubka's inability to hold a simple ball in the box led to team-mate Tom Lees being sent off for handball. Then his failure to hold a scuffed effort from Lomana LuaLua led to another goal for the visitors. The crowd chanted for Rachubka's replacement, and boss Simon Grayson granted their wish, but his side still slid to a 5-0 defeat.

Roberto Jimenez (November 2019)

Roberto had done little to inspire confidence at West Ham since stepping in for the injured Lukasz Fabianski, and he reached rock-bottom in the game against Tottenham as waved a Son Heung-min shot into the net then failed to deal with a tame header from Harry Kane as the Hammers crashed to defeat. After one more appearance, he joined Alaves on loan.

Joe Hart (October 2013)

Joe Hart endured a disastrous performance against Bayern Munich (Martin Rickett/PA)

Hart's descent from Manchester City stalwart to Burnley reserve was emphasised by his performance against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Hart deflected home a Franck Ribery effort then sloppily allowed an Arjen Robben effort to beat him at his near post. Shortly afterwards, City boss Manuel Pellegrini dropped Hart for the Premier League clash with Norwich, replacing him with Costel Pantilimon.

Loris Karius (October 2018)

Liverpool keeper Karius had a shocker on the biggest stage of all, hurling the ball to Karim Benzema then mishandling a long-range effort from Gareth Bale as Real Madrid were assisted to a 3-1 victory in the Champions League final. Karius tearfully apologised and claimed he had been blinded by the floodlights. A later medical report concluded he had suffered from concussion after an earlier head clash.
