How Manchester United could line up against Crystal Palace

Sports Mole takes a look at how Manchester United could line up against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon at Old Trafford.

Manchester United take on Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils will be hoping to better their impotent 0-0 draw in this fixture under Jose Mourinho last season, in what turned out to be one of the Portuguese's last matches in the home dugout at the Theatre of Dreams.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side picked up just eight points from their final nine matches last season, a dismal run that cost them Champions League football this time around.

2019-20 has had a promising start, however, with the Red Devils having been just a Paul Pogba penalty away from taking maximum points from a tricky opening two games against Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Frenchman's spot kick was saved, but a 4-0 victory over Chelsea and a 1-1 draw at Molineux is not be sniffed at, and represents an improvement from last season.

The Red Devils will be looking to make it six points out of six at home for the new season against Roy Hodgson's already beleaguered looking Palace side.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at how United could line up on Saturday.

United will look for stability with their defence, and should stick to the same back four that has started their opening two matches against Chelsea and Wolves. This will see Victor Lindelof again partner world-record defender Harry Maguire at the heart of the defence, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw marshalling the flanks.

22-year-old Scotland international Scott McTominay has looked composed at the heart of United's midfield so far this season - expect to see him again keep the experienced Nemanja Matic on the substitutes' bench on Saturday afternoon.

Summer recruit Daniel James replaced Andreas Pereira in the starting XI for the trip to Wolves last time out, but Pereira could return to the lineup for the visit of Palace to provide some creativity and bite in the midfield.

Despite his missed penalty, Paul Pogba is a certainty to start, as are the in-form trio of Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, who can cause Palace all sorts of problems with their electrifying pace. Roy Hodgson's side will sit deep in an attempt to frustrate these three in particular, denying them space to run into.

Youngsters Daniel James and Mason Greenwood can provide an x-factor from the bench, whilst the wily Juan Mata's eye for a killer final ball could also come in handy at some point for the Red Devils.
