On this day: Chelsea edge out Manchester United

Twenty years ago today, Gavin Peacock fires in the only goal of the game as Chelsea defeat Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United headed to Stamford Bridge on this day 20 years ago not only as Premier League champions, but also on a 17-match unbeaten run that stretched back to March.

On the other hand, Chelsea were not even close to being the force that they are today. In fact, they'd end the 1993-94 season 14th in a 22-team league and some 41 points behind United, who would go on to retain the title.

However, on this occasion, the underdogs were able upset the form book to claim all three points in London.

A goal in the 17th minute was all it took as Gavin Peacock capitalised on a rare error from United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel. The Dane got down to meet Steve Clarke's drive from distance, but he could only parry it and Peacock pounced to lift the ball into the net.

While United's first defeat of the season was a major talking point, perhaps the most memorable moment of the encounter was provided by Eric Cantona.

Before Peacock had scored, Chelsea goalkeeper Dimitri Kharine raced outside of his penalty area to head clear the danger before Roy Keane could gain possession. The ball was worked to Cantona, but instead of taking a touch, United's Frenchman swiveled and went for goal. His effort from almost 40 yards out beat a retreating Kharine, but bounced up and struck the crossbar before being collected by Chelsea's grateful custodian.

He may not have scored, but it prompted BBC Sport commentator John Motson to ask: "Who needs Pele?"

Cantona had another opportunity, this time far more orthodox, during the second half. Kharine completely misjudged a Lee Sharpe cross, but Cantona somehow headed wide of the target from six yards out.

It meant that Chelsea held on for a 1-0 win and they went on to record another victory, by the same scoreline, in the return fixture at Old Trafford in March. United would gain revenge, though, by winning the 1994 FA Cup final 4-0.
