'A serious situation' - Amorim issues worrying update on Martinez injury

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has called the injury that Lisandro Martinez suffered against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon "serious".

Martinez had to be replaced in the latter stages of his side's 2-0 defeat after appearing to get his studs caught in the turf, which led to his knee jarring, and the Argentina international was in severe pain when he was stretchered off the field.

Amorim was asked about the situation immediately after his side's latest home defeat, and the Portuguese has admitted that he is fearing the worst when it comes to the 27-year-old.

"We are going to see in the next days but I think it is a serious situation. He is not only a great player but a strong character in the dressing room. He felt it and when you are a player, you know when it is something serious. We are here to help him in this difficult moment like he has helped us," the Man United head coach told Sky Sports News.

Martinez missed a chunk of action last season with a knee injury, and he will now be assessed before a diagnosis is made, but there are already fears surrounding a potential ACL problem, which would mean a long recovery process.

Amorim addresses "really bad" result

It proved to be an incredibly disappointing day for Man United all-round, with the team suffering a 2-0 defeat to Palace, and Amorim has conceded that it was a "really bad" result.

"The result is really bad. The performance was a little bit better than the last games. We controlled the transitions quite well for Crystal Palace. We suffered two goals that we can avoid and the injury on Lisandro Martinez was tough for the team," the Man United head coach added after the clash.

"It's normal for the fans to feel negative, it is a hard season for them but football can change in certain moments. I will prepare the next game and move forward. Better things will come."

In a separate interview with BBC Sport, Amorim said: "It was hard on us, the result. We improved some things from the last games. We improved the better connections, we had more possession - the players created situations, but we suffered two goals that we can avoid.

"Tomorrow we have to prepare for the next game. The idea was not to leave Rasmus [Hojlund] and Joshua [Zirkzee] on the bench. It was to use the characteristics of Kobbie Mainoo to improve the team."

When are Man United back in action?

Man United will be bidding to bounce back from their latest disappointment when they welcome Leicester City to Old Trafford in the FA Cup on Friday night.

The Red Devils will then be back in Premier League action against Tottenham Hotspur on February 16, and it remains to be seen whether the team can find some consistency in the final months of the campaign. body check tags ::
