Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has emerged as a doubt for his side's Premier League clash with Chelsea after withdrawing from the Serbia squad to face Montenegro and Romania.
The 30-year-old has made eight appearances for the Red Devils so far this season, but could be forced to sit out the October 20 meeting with his former club after returning to Carrington due to an unspecified injury.
Matic had initially joined up with his Serbian teammates ahead of their international double header, but will now complete his rehabilitation back with United.
The midfielder is the second United player to withdraw from international duty this week after Luke Shaw also pulled out of England's squad to face Croatia and Spain.
Both players now face a race against time to be fit for the trip to Stamford Bridge, where they will look to become the first team to beat Chelsea in the league this season.
