Henning Berg: 'David Moyes will command respect'

Henning Berg believes that new Manchester United manager David Moyes will have no problem exerting his authority when he takes over at Old Trafford.

Former Manchester United defender Henning Berg has expressed his belief that new manager David Moyes will have no trouble exerting his authority at the club.

Moyes takes over at Old Trafford on July 1, replacing Sir Alex Ferguson, who became the most successful manager in English football history during his 26-year spell at the club.

Many of Ferguson's former backroom staff members such as Mike Phelan, Eric Steele and Rene Meulensteen will also leave the club, and Berg believes that the men Moyes brings in to replace them will help him command respect.

"I don't think [exerting his authority] will be a problem. The way he leads I am 100% sure he will have the respect and authority any way," said Berg.

"I am sure he is looking forward to the job. Everyone says it will be very difficult after Sir Alex Ferguson - and it will be - but it is a great opportunity to be honest. David Moyes has time to plan, he will know the league, know the people.

"He had his staff working well at Everton and he knows the guys he has been working with and that works. But I am 100% certain it would have worked with Mike Phelan and Rene as well. But that is his decision and he wants to do what he feels is right for Manchester United to be the best they can be."

Berg made 103 appearances for United during a four-year spell at the club.
