Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has predicted that Jose Mourinho will bring "huge success" to Manchester United if he is appointed as the club's new manager.
The former Chelsea boss, who was sacked by the Blues in December, is widely expected to take over from Louis van Gaal this week.
It is believed that Van Gaal was sacked by United this morning, just two days after he guided the club to their first FA Cup triumph since 2004.
The writing appeared to be on the wall for the Dutchman as the team failed to qualify for next season's Champions League, eventually settling for fifth place in the Premier League table.
If Mourinho is appointed, the Portuguese will head to Old Trafford having won league titles at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
"Jose certainly has the name and the pedigree in terms of trophies and the success he's had, and that's what Manchester United want," Carragher told Sky Sports News.
"Is he the perfect fit in terms of what United would want going back through the years? Probably not in terms of blooding young players and the type of football, but he's managed Real Madrid, and their great attacking players like Cristiano Ronaldo, and won the league there so he is a good fit.
"I think he'll bring them huge success because he's done that everywhere he's been."
United are yet to make an official announcement regarding the managerial situation.
