Michael Carrick has said that he expects up to six clubs to be battling for the Premier League title in the second half of the season.
Manchester United began the defence of their title with a 4-1 win over Swansea City last week.
The 32-year-old midfielder told Sky Sports News: "Potentially there could be between four and six teams involved right until January or February.
"Just after that is when it really gets sorted out. The pressure kicks in and the expectations change. It's how you deal with that.
"Two years ago, Tottenham were right in there, but they faded away a bit. Hopefully we'll be in with a shout at that time and are able to use our experience to see us through."
The champions face Chelsea on Monday evening.
