Edinson Cavani has thanked the Manchester United fans for their support during his time at the club.

The Uruguay international will officially leave the Red Devils on a free transfer at the end of June, and he is believed to be keen to continue his career in La Liga.

The 35-year-old joined Man United in October 2020 after his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expired, and he made 59 appearances for the English giants in all competitions, scoring 19 goals and contributing seven assists.

Cavani has said that he is "really grateful" to have had a strong relationship with the club's supporters since his move to Manchester.

"I sincerely have nothing but words of gratitude towards the fans and supporters of Manchester United," Cavani told MUTV.

"Honestly, they have shown me a lot of respect from the very first moment I arrived. I think they've greatly recognised all the hard work I've always tried to put in the best way possible, giving my best for this team.

"I really am very grateful, and I'll be leaving here with a happy memory of that affection they showed me and always displayed."

Cavani excelled during his first campaign at Old Trafford, scoring 17 goals and contributing six assists in 39 appearances in all competitions.

The Uruguay international struggled to make his mark during the 2021-22 campaign, though, managing only two goals and one assist in 20 appearances, missing a lot of football due to fitness problems.

Cavani has conceded that he "wanted to contribute more this season" and regrets that most of his goals came in empty stadiums due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

"I wanted to contribute more this season," said the forward. "One of the things that has left me with a slightly bitter taste is that when we had a highly enjoyable and pretty decent [2020/21] season, we weren't able to have the supporters along with us.

"And now, this season, with the fans coming back into the grounds and stadiums, I haven't really been able to have the kind of campaign, if I'm being honest, on a personal front that I would really have liked. Where I would have been able to score the kind of goals I did last season, and then be celebrating them a bit more with the fans - the kind of stuff that it's great for a forward or a striker to be doing.

"But I want to sincerely thank the fans from the bottom of my heart, because they have always shown me a lot of affection, and that is very important for a footballer."

Cavani scored 12 goals and registered four assists in 41 Premier League appearances, while he netted five goals and registered three assists in five Europa League outings, but the South American failed to register in eight Champions League appearances for the club.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the experienced striker wants to move to La Liga, but he is also open to listening to offers from elsewhere.

Cavani's departure will lead to the Red Devils signing a new centre-forward this summer, with Benfica's Darwin Nunez thought to be the club's leading target. body check tags ::
