Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag has said that he was pleased with the performance of his players in Tuesday's pre-season opener with Liverpool in Thailand.

Jadon Sancho, Fred, Anthony Martial and Facundo Pellistri were on the scoresheet against Jurgen Klopp's side, as the 20-time English champions ran out 4-0 winners.

Ten Hag has said that Man United "are happy" with their first match, with the Dutchman seeing plenty of "potential" from his team in their opening fixture of pre-season.

"We are satisfied today because I think there was a team with great spirit," Ten Hag told MUTV. "We know we are just starting and when things begin to click like the press.

"We know we made some mistakes in pressing and conceded some chances but also we created a lot and I think our team played bravely, they were proactive and we had to work really hard to get out of some mistakes. Of course, we are happy with the first game.

"It was not only the result. I know we have good players but we have to play as a team. We started the first game well so I am happy."

However, Ten Hag has said that he saw "a lot of mistakes" over the course of the 90 minutes, and he is refusing to read too deeply into the 4-0 victory over last season's FA Cup and EFL Cup winners.

"Of course it will take time, believe me I have seen a lot of mistakes but I will not say [what they were]. But to be honest, Liverpool played with three teams and they were not at their strongest, so we are not overestimating them [our players]," he added after the contest in Bangkok.

"We saw some really good things. What you see is we have a lot of creativity and speed in the front and we have potential."

Sancho, Fred and Martial were all on the scoresheet in the first half of the match, before Pellistri brilliantly picked out the back of the net in the latter stages to cap off a successful first game at the helm for Ten Hag.

Man United will now head to Australia for matches against Melbourne Victory, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa before returning to Europe for their final two friendlies of the summer.

The 20-time English champions will take on Atletico Madrid on July 30 and Rayo Vallecano on July 31, with the second fixture due to be held at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils will then start their 2022-23 Premier League campaign against Brighton & Hove Albion on August 7 before making the trip to Brentford one week later.

Tyrell Malacia made his debut for Man United against Liverpool, having recently arrived from Feyenoord, while Martial made a strong impression upon his return from a loan spell at Sevilla.

There was no Cristiano Ronaldo for the Red Devils on Tuesday, though, as the Portugal international has been given time off to deal with a family issue. body check tags ::
