Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has claimed that midfielder Donny van de Beek 'must prove himself' in order to claim a regular starting spot at Old Trafford this season.
The appointment of the former ahead of the 2022-23 campaign seemingly provided fresh hope for Van de Beek to resurrect his career at United, having worked under Ten Hag at Ajax.
It was under Ten Hag that the central midfielder flourished and produced the kind of form that prompted the Red Devils to sign him for £40m two years ago.
However, the 25-year-old has since endured a hugely disappointing time in Manchester so far, where he has started just four Premier League games for the club across the past two seasons.
The Netherlands international will not be provided with any special treatment from the new United manager though, despite their strong relationship in the past.
When asked about what Van de Beek must do to earn a regular starting spot at the club, Ten Hag said: "It's the same for every player - he has to do it by himself.
"Me as a manager and the coaching staff around him can do everything to set the right conditions so he can perform, but in the end, the player has to do it by himself.
"They have to take responsibility for their performance. Donny has the capability. I have seen it, but he has to prove himself."
The new United boss was speaking on the club's pre-season tour of Australia, during which Van de Beek failed to start in any of the three victories over Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace. body check tags ::
