Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has warned Paris Saint-Germain-bound Angel di Maria that he will be haunted by his "failure" at Old Trafford.
The Argentine winger struggled to scale the heights expected of him during the 2014-15 campaign following a British-record £59.7m move from Real Madrid last summer.
On Tuesday, the 27-year-old revealed that he was "very happy" to join PSG as a £44m deal edges closer, but Ferdinand says that he would have preferred to see him stay and prove his mettle with United.
"He will now always have on his CV that he was a failure at Man United," the legendary defender told ESPN.
"As a professional, I wouldn't want something like that on my record. If I could rectify it by staying and trying to prove myself, I would have done that.
"As a fan, I would have liked for him to stay there and prove he can perform for Man United. That is what we all wanted to see when the club paid so much for him last summer, but that isn't happening, it seems."
Di Maria bagged 11 assists but just four goals in 32 appearances last season.
