Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler believes that Manchester United are making the wrong move in appointing Louis van Gaal as manager.
The Netherlands boss is expected to be announced as David Moyes's permanent successor next week.
Despite the 62-year-old Dutchman winning trophies with Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich during his career, Fowler believes that United should have called on a younger coach to lead the new era at Old Trafford.
"I don't know if Louis van Gaal is the right man for Manchester United," Fowler told talkSPORT. "He's had his time. It might sound silly, but he's too old.
"You can't argue with his credentials and what he's achieved, but Man United should have gone for a young, vibrant manager."
Meanwhile, veteran Ryan Giggs is reportedly stalling over an offer to become Van Gaal's assistant boss next season.
