England manager Roy Hodgson says he is "disappointed" that Rio Ferdinand rejected the chance to join up with the squad.

England manager Roy Hodgson has admitted that he is "disappointed" by Rio Ferdinand's decision to turn down the chance to compete for the Three Lions this week.

The Manchester United defender pulled out of the squad due to his training regime, despite receiving his first call-up since June 2011.

Following his decision, the 34-year-old has since opted to perform as a pundit for TV channel Al Jazeera in Qatar for England's game against San Marino tomorrow.

"I was disappointed when he couldn't accept our invitation," Hodgson said in a press conference. "It would have been nice to have him here. What he actually does now and how he operates in the coming couple of weeks, that's his and the club's business.

"As far as I'm concerned I'm only focused on the player's here. In this instance, Rio made it clear that he wasn't able to accept my invitation on this occasion and we'll see what happens in the future."

When asked by reporters if this is the end of Ferdinand's England career, Hodgson said: "I think we should just wait and see."

Meanwhile, defender Gary Cahill, who was ruled out of tomorrow's game, will also be unable for the clash against Montenegro.
