Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has said that Andre Onana has "a long way to come back" due to his struggles in the early stages of his career at Old Trafford.

The Cameroonian was signed from Inter Milan over the summer as a replacement for David de Gea, with the latter allowed to leave the club on a free transfer.

Onana starred for Inter last season, but he has struggled to impress for the Red Devils, conceding 19 times in his first 11 appearances, keeping just three clean sheets in the process.

The 27-year-old has made multiple errors during his early career at Old Trafford, and ex-Man United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel said after the Brentford clash last weekend that the club's players are likely to be losing trust in the summer arrival.

Keane has said that Onana has "already made six, seven or eight big mistakes" since arriving in Manchester, and the club's former captain has major concerns when it comes to the stopper.

"Obviously he's (Onana) had a really poor start. We talk about positions at any big club (and) the goalkeeper at Manchester United has to have a huge personality to deal with mistakes," Keane told The Overlap.

"But he's already made six, seven or eight big mistakes that have led to goals. It's not been a great start. It's a long way to come back.

"We have seen goalkeepers come to United and have had a tricky start and we have worked with some really good goalkeepers, but there seems no way back for them.

"I remember speaking to different goalkeeping coaches at Manchester United and they would always say, keepers make mistakes, but it's how you deal with it at Manchester United.

"Peter (Schmeichel) made loads of mistakes at Manchester United, but what he did was recover very quickly and that's the problem with the goalkeeper."

Onana kept a clean sheet on his debut for Man United against Wolverhampton Wanderers back in August, but he has conceded 12 times in his last seven Premier League outings.

The Cameroonian has also shipped seven goals in two Champions League appearances, and his performances in both matches against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray were heavily criticised.

Onana's role in Mathias Jensen's goal for Brentford last weekend was also questioned, but Scott McTominay came up with a stoppage-time brace for the Red Devils to hand them a huge three points ahead of the international break. body check tags ::
