Roy Keane believes that Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal needs two or three years to rebuild the team at Old Trafford.

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane believes that manager Louis van Gaal needs time to rebuild the team.

The Dutchman will end his first season in charge at Old Trafford without silverware following Monday night's 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The only objective remaining for the Red Devils is to finish in the top four of the Premier League, but they face a tough test as Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton are all vying for a spot.

Following United's FA Cup exit, Keane urged the club not to be hasty and dismiss Van Gaal in a similar fashion to David Moyes, despite claiming that failing to seal a Champions League spot this season would be a "disaster".

"Van Gaal is going to get criticised, you'd expect that," Keane said on Match of the Day. "Give the man a chance - two or three years.

"A lot of fans don't quite understand how to run a football club as big as Manchester United. They should have given David Moyes more time but didn't. What are they going to do? Chop and change again? Van Gaal has been in the door two minutes. It takes time. It's literally a rebuilding job."

In the league, United are currently fourth in the table.
