Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has dismissed the notion that he should have bolstered his attacking options during the January transfer window.

The knee problem sustained by captain Wayne Rooney has left Van Gaal with Anthony Martial and rookie Will Keane as the only recognised strikers at Old Trafford.

However, when asked by reporters if he had made a mistake by not addressing the situation last month, the United boss responded: "No, I don't think that's the case. We have Anthony Martial, another striker. He has played several matches in this role.

"He wants to play in this role also. l knew in advance that our captain Wayne Rooney should play a lot of matches because he has showed this every year.

"I called Will Keane back and he does very good in the second team. That is at a lower level but sometimes you have to show it at a higher level and now he has the chance."

Although there has been no official confirmation from the club, Rooney's injury is expected to sideline him for around two months.
