Manchester United's failures 'to cost Cristiano Ronaldo £5m'

Manchester United's season is set to cost Cristiano Ronaldo £5m in bonuses, according to a report.

The Red Devils are set for another trophyless season in 2021-22, having been knocked out of the FA Cup and Champions League, while they are no longer in the Premier League title race.

According to The Sun, Ronaldo signed a contract that was heavily bonus-related when he returned to Old Trafford, which was done to counteract the drop in his weekly salary, which had been £750,000-per-week at Juventus.

The forward was set to earn £2.5m if the club had reached the Champions League final, but instead, they were knocked out in the quarter-final stage by Atletico Madrid, while failing in both domestic cups also cost him financially.

If Manchester United had won the Premier League, Ronaldo was set to earn up to £1.5m in bonuses alone, but he could earn some money if he finishes as the club's top scorer.

Right now, that is the case as the Portuguese international has 18 goals and three assists in all competitions.
