Mason Greenwood has reportedly met up with some of his Manchester United teammates since all charges against him were dropped.
The 21-year-old was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault following accusations from a woman, and he was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.
Greenwood was also facing charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and he had been due to go on trial in November.
However, it was recently revealed that all criminal charges against him had been dropped.
"We have a duty to keep cases under continuous review. In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case," said a spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service.
"We have explained our decision to all parties. We would always encourage any potential victims to come forward and report to police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met."
Man United are currently conducting their own investigation, with the club determining whether to reintroduce him into the first-team squad or potentially terminate his contract.
There is also the option of a summer sale, with Fenerbahce believed to be interested.
A recent report claimed that Greenwood will miss the remainder of the season, as the 20-time English champions are determined to take their time when it comes to a final decision.
However, Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag is believed to have now spoken with the England international over the telephone.
According to The Sun, Greenwood has also recently met up with some of his teammates in an apparent bid to rebuild relationships.
"He's reached out to some of the United players, some of them he's known since his academy days," the newspaper quotes a source as saying.
"They've met up with him in private to hear him out so they can make their own mind up."
Meanwhile, another source is quoted as saying: "There is a level of sympathy for someone who is innocent in the eyes of the law and a long-standing teammate. But the players are absolutely focused on keeping this juggernaut on the road."
Greenwood, thought to collect in the region of £70,000 a week, has a contract at Old Trafford until June 2025, with the option of an additional 12 months.
The forward has scored 35 goals and registered 12 assists in 129 appearances for Man United in all competitions, with his last appearance coming in January 2022 against West Ham United.
There is believed to be a split among the club's staff when it comes to his future, and it is thought that it will be several more months before a final decision is made by the English giants. body check tags ::
