Former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen has admitted that he felt "deflated, disillusioned and flat" upon leaving the club in 2013.
The 50-year-old spent six years working alongside Sir Alex Ferguson in the Old Trafford dugout, before being replaced when David Moyes took over the reins.
Meulensteen has since gone on to manage Anzhi Makhachkala and Fulham, although he confesses that his United exit hit him hard.
"The last home game of the season was against Swansea, and things were not really clear," he told Retro United. "It was only weeks later that it started becoming more apparent that my time at United had come to an end.
"How did I feel ? Well it was a very sad moment, I felt deflated, disillusioned and flat."
Since being replaced as manager of Fulham, Meulensteen has taken up a consultancy role at MLS side Philadelphia Union.
