Jose Mourinho: 'Manchester City all but impossible to follow'

Jose Mourinho admits that Manchester City are "practically impossible to follow" as he targets a second-placed finish for Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho has admitted that a second-place finish in the Premier League is this season's target for Manchester United due to the dominance of cross-town rivals Manchester City.

The Red Devils leapfrogged Liverpool into second thanks to Saturday afternoon's 2-0 win over Swansea City at Old Trafford, just hours after the Reds' 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace.

Mourinho believes that Man United are a much better side this term compared to last season but admits that runaway league leaders Man City are "making it practically impossible to follow", though the FA Cup could offer some solace.

"Last season we won titles but finished sixth in the league," Mourinho told BBC Sport.

"We want to finish second this year and have 10 points more than last season, more goals scored, less goals conceded, but there is a club which is making it practically impossible to follow. In other leagues we would be fighting for the title.

"We are having a positive season and we still have the FA Cup to come. We are going to fight for our presence there."

United's next game is away at the Etihad Stadium against Pep Guardiola's charges, who sit 13 points clear of the Red Devils ahead of their trip to Everton on Saturday evening.
