Jose Mourinho: 'Still work to do for Manchester United'

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho admits that his side still have a lot of work to do before they are ready for the new season.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that there is still a lot of work to do with his side heading into the new season.

Mourinho claimed his first trophy as United boss courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Leicester City in the Community Shield match at Wembley this afternoon, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring the winning goal late on.

The Portuguese boss described his side's display as a mixed performance, but is pleased to have kicked his reign off with silverware.

"The first half was much better than the second, which doesn't surprise me because the team is not fit enough in these conditions to keep stability in the game. They increased the pace of the game in the second half with [Demarai] Gray, [Ahmed] Musa and [Jamie] Vardy, they changed the game to their side," he told BT Sport.

"I think it's an important victory but we have lots of work (to do). I would not be ambitious if I said we had a fantastic performance, because it was not a fantastic performance. It was a possible performance for the moment of the season, some of these guys who played today had only one week of training.

"No pre-season in China, a very bad pre-season, so I think step by step we are changing, but I think it's always important to start with a trophy."

United will begin their Premier League campaign away to Bournemouth next Sunday.
