David Moyes has claimed that Wayne Rooney will be fit for England but will not be ready to play for Manchester United in the Community Shield today.
Rooney has missed much of United's pre-season amid speculation over his future, but has been called up for Wednesday's friendly against Scotland.
His manager believes that the extra few days will help him, and having spoken to Roy Hodgson, Moyes hopes that Rooney will only play for a short while.
"I had a long conversation with Roy [Hodgson] last week about Wayne's situation," Moyes told MUTV.
"He has trained with the reserves as a non-contact, floating player. He trained with the first team on Saturday, so he is more likely to be ready for England than he is for us.
"I would only expect Roy to play him for a short while. Hopefully Wayne is not in too good form because it would be good if Scotland could get a result."
Rooney is expected to play 45 minutes at Wembley next week.
