Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly informed Phil Jones that the Englishman is in the club's plans for the 2021-22 campaign.
Jones has not featured in a competitive match for the Red Devils since January 2020 due to a long-term knee problem, but he played 30 minutes of a behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old's future at Old Trafford continues to be called into question, but according to the Daily Mail, Solskjaer is planning to use Jones as one of five centre-backs this season.
Raphael Varane has arrived at the club this summer and could make his debut against Southampton on Sunday, while Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Harry Maguire are also battling for the centre-back positions.
Jones still has two years left to run on his contract at Old Trafford, while he has made 224 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions, contributing six goals and 10 assists in the process.
The Englishman's most productive season came in 2011-12, when he made 41 outings in all competitions, but he has only featured twice in the Premier League since the end of the 2018-19 campaign. body check tags ::
