Martin O'Neill feels sorry for Sir Alex Ferguson after Manchester United lost the Premier League on goal difference.

Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has admitted that he feels for Sir Alex Ferguson after Manchester United lost the Premier League title in the dying seconds of the season.

United beat Sunderland 1-0 at the Stadium of Light and thought that they had won the title with Manchester City trailing 2-1 to Queens Park Rangers.

However, City hit two late goals at the Etihad Stadium to ensure they lifted the Premier League crown, leaving United to miss out on goal difference. O'Neill found his side at the centre of the final day drama and has sympathised with Ferguson.

"It is so traumatic it's untrue," he told Sky Sports News.

"You think throughout the whole season when you might have scored a couple of extra goals, maybe you start to think that there were one or two matches where you've made substitutions where you were leading quite comfortably in the game.

"I'm sure those thoughts are going through Sir Alex's mind. He's won enough championships to be able to consign this to history."

Sunderland finished the campaign in 13th place.
