Ray Parlour: 'Anthony Martial will flop at Manchester United'

Manchester United will lose their £36m gamble on 19-year-old French striker Anthony Martial, according to Arsenal legend Ray Parlour.

Former Arsenal winger Ray Parlour has claimed that Manchester United's big-money "gamble" on young France striker Anthony Martial will backfire.

Martial, 19, became the world's most expensive teenager on deadline day when the Red Devils splashed out £36m - which could rise to £58m - to sign him from AS Monaco.

Comparisons between the Gunners' all-time record goalscorer Thierry Henry have been made, with Louis Saha certain that both players share similar qualities, but Parlour believes that the youngster will fail.

"Will Martial succeed? I look forward to seeing him play, but I think it's going to be a miss, because the money they've spent is an unbelievable amount," Parlour told Sky Sports News.

"For a 19-year-old kid, he's not proven. If he proves to be like a Thierry Henry, which is what a lot of people are saying, then he could obviously be a great signing, but I think it is a massive gamble to take on a 19-year-old kid.

"With the money they've put out, I could be totally wrong, but I'm going to say miss on that one."

Martial could make his debut in Saturday's visit of Liverpool to Old Trafford.
